The goal of our Ph.D. program is to train students for research activities in the field of speech and hearing sciences. For all students, the Ph.D. program places an emphasis on the acquisition of a fundamental knowledge base and the development of research skills. Many of our students will apply these research skills to clinical populations. A Ph.D. typically requires five years of research training and coursework, with the first two to three years devoted primarily to taking classes and developing basic research skills. During the first two years, students complete a pre-dissertation project and their qualifying exam. After the qualifying exam, their time is dedicated to proposing their dissertation through a prospectus and then completing their dissertation.

In the first year of the Ph.D. program, students are matched with a mentor who will oversee their progress through the Ph.D. program. They also choose an advisory committee, comprised of other academic faculty and a minor representative (or second major representative), to oversee their academic and research progress.  

If you are interested in completing a Ph.D. with clinical certification, we offer two tracks: combined Ph.D. and Au.D. degree and a Ph.D. with clinical training in speech-language pathology degree.
